Phoenix Mars Lander Fills It’s Oven

June 12, 2008 – 1:26 pm

Yesterday Phoenix Mars Lander was successful in filling up oven #4 with Mars soil.  It took the soil from the right trench called “Baby Bear”. The oven size is a fraction of a tea spoon, so it’s really small.

The trench on the left is presumably a test trench. The white in the picture is either a salt layer or ice. We should know soon enough when they analyze what’s in the oven.

NASA has a podcast about the mission over here. They are predicting about 2 to 3 weeks before they can dig deep enough to get ice.
